Master's Final Project - Needs Assessment
Information Literacy for Electronic Resources
ETEC 690 Educational Tecnology Practicum
Spring 2012 - Application, Write-up, Analysis & Presentation
Abstract: Academic libraries have recently positioned themselves in the twenty-first century with online databases that students can remotely access via the Internet. Online courses and electronic resources are a central component of higher education. Effective library instruction can improve academic performance and was traditionally delivered in a classroom environment. The twenty-first century learner requires a dynamic learning environment with emerging technologies, which may include online instructional modules. In order to determine the need for delivering library instruction with online instructional modules, a needs assessment was conducted to identify common themes, gaps, strengths, weaknesses, and preferences pertaining to student usage of online library resources. The subjects, mostly English 100 undergraduate students at the University of Hawai‘i Maui College (UHMC), voluntarily participated in an anonymous online survey. The results indicate a primary need for library instruction regarding electronic resources. The data gathered may be used by library staff to improve information literacy in the area of electronic resources.

ETEC 687 Instructional Development Practicum

Fall 2011 - Research and Development
Project: Needs Assessment
Project Description, Purpose, & Goal: The American Library Association (2011) states, “To be information literate, a person must be able to recognize when information is needed and have the ability to locate, evaluate, and use effectively the needed information” (Presidential Committee on Information Literacy: Final Report, para. 3). The purpose of my project is to assess students’ behaviors, attitudes, and preferences regarding usage of online library resources. My project focuses on students’ ability to locate needed information via electronic resources. The goal is to assess information literacy knowledge, skills, behavior, and attitudes. The analyzed data will be used to make appropriate recommendations to improve information literacy and determine the need for online instructional modules.

Idea Paper
One of the requirements of the semester was to convey the idea of our master's project. Here is my idea paper as submitted in Fall 2011. However, since then, a few modifications have been made including a slightly different title, a more refined target population, and more. Stay tuned for details!
